MIPTV 2022 SPECIAL ISSUE
1. AN OVERVIEW: LIMITED SPACES, SAME ENERGY
Okay, it was a smaller edition - at least compared to the previous ones till 2019 - with all the exhibitors’ stands concentrated almost entirely in Riviera 7, only one of the many spaces of the Palais, which were sadly empty. But the energy was the same or even more. It’s still too early to understand what’s going on about markets and which kind of event - in presence or online - will prevail. But from what we’ve seen in these days, it leads to believe that the physical markets won’t loose their importance and their pivotal role (even if with smaller spaces and smaller number of total visitors). Maybe it could also be useful to find new formulas, for example increasing the focus on medium, small and very small producers/distributors (the giants will tend to organize more and more their own events) and also on future customers (e.g. students of media schools).

2. FORMATS TO WATCH
A personal list of 4 formats, taken from David Ciaramella’s and Virginia Mouseler’s presentations, which have not been described yet in the previous Friday’s Espresso issues, with something remarkable.
The most original: The Fast and the Farm-ish, a competitive tractor-racing show which premiered on February on BBC3. In each episode 2 teams (male vs female) from Wales, England, Northern Ireland and Scotland will face a number of entertaining and imaginative challenges that puts their driving skill and vehicle power to the test (racing through a muddy bog, demolishing sheds in a radical ten-pin tractor bowling game…). That’s all, but the result is pure adrenaline and lots of fun. Sometimes a single detail (tractors instead of cars) is enough to make something different and engaging.
The most transmedial: Musical Battles México, on air on TvAzteca from March. It’s simply a singing talent contest, where, thanks to an innovative QR App, viewers can vote in real time, without risk of system crash or any other kind of problems. Everyone who has dealt with these technologies knows that this is not an insignificant detail…
The hottest: Open House: The Great Sex Experiment, on air from March on Channel 4. Six committed couples go through a very intense, fast track experience to see if opening up their relationship is for them. They’ll discover if having sex with other people spice up their own sex lives and strengthen their relationships or could it drive them apart. Definitively hot!
The most extreme: Freeze the Fear with Wim Hof, which will be on air from 12the April on BBC1. Eight celebrities embark on a once-in-a-lifetime epic adventure, under the training of extreme athlete Wim Hof, aka “The Iceman”, to complete a series of challenges in sub-zero temperatures that will test the participants physically and mentally. Definitively cool!
3. INTERNATIONAL FORMAT AWARDS
Here the complete list of this edition’s winners, that are -with only some exceptions (LEGO Masters premiered in 2017) - all quite recent. That’s great: in these awards it’s not obvious at all.
Best Factual Entertainment Format: The Musical of Your Life, produced by Dedsit and distributed by Be-Entertainment. In each episode a celebrity is invited to a theater to join the host for a unique up-close and personal interview about the key moments of their life.
