1. ANOTHER DATING SHOW FOR STREAMER…
Streamer platforms have “discovered” the dating shows - probably the easiest way of trying to catch the young target -, so in the last months dozens of brand-new formats of this genre have appeared on the OTT screens all around the world. The last one in order of time is Date Night (wt) that will premiere on Prime Video in the U.K. and Ireland.
The details of the show are not completely revealed yet. According to the first rumors, the series will follow singletons in their search for love through a bespoke app on their mobile phone (something similar to Tinder, Hinge and Bubble). From the comfort of their sofas, together with their friends and family, the app will be visible on their living room televisions, allowing everyone to see and comment as they browse their chat for potential dates.
Singletons can consult with their dearest on how to craft the perfect opening message and take their advice on whether eligible suitors are up to scratch. And when they finally have a date, every moment is filmed for their friends and family in order to obtain feedback from them. So, it seems a kind of “shared online dating”.
The show will be hosted by the Irish presenter Laura Whitmore (pic) who quit ITV’s Love Island back in August for personal issues.
2. …AND ANOTHER PET SHOW FOR LINEAR CHANNEL
It’s natural, but a bit disappointing from the creative point of view: when a promising trend is discovered, it is exploited in a massive way until it gets boring. This is the case of the “pet show trend” that has boomed in the Covid period (see Friday’s Espresso of 14th Oct and others) and continues to be very prolific.
Now Fur Babies (w.t.), commissioned by the free-to-air English broadcaster Channel 4 and produced by Wonderhood Studios, explores one of the aspects not yet considered in the previous programs: pet pregnancies.
Embedded in vet practices across the U.K., the format will use a state-of-the-art rig to capture all the important moments in pet pregnancy -from initial ultrasounds and pregnancy checks through to the labors- complications and the final heartwarming moments when the young pets are rehomed and meet their new families.
Vets James Greenwood and Bolu Eso use the latest in medical technology and their expert skills to help nervous owners and their pets through pregnancy to a safe delivery, whether it is cats, dogs, guinea pigs or rabbits.
What can we say? Looking for the next pet declination…
3. A FINAL ANALYSIS ON THE MIPCOM
It has really been an honor for me to join David Bodycombe and Justin Scroggie in the Bonus Episode of their popular podcast TV SHOW & TELL, to unpack all the latest news and formats from the 2022 MIPCOM, the major European market for buying and selling formats and completed programming.
We discussed what’s new in unscripted genres such as dating (Love for the Ages, the Real Love Boat), social experiments (Rise & Fall, Out of Office), factual entertainment (Zero Sum Game, Hold the Front Page) and game shows (Finders Keepers). There was also a discussion of the use of A.I., the benefits of chance meetings, opportunities to attend MIP TV for free, and the lack of big, ambitious formats and much more.
